Severe Thunderstorm Prep: 10-Minute Checklist
When a Severe Thunderstorm Warning is issued, you may have minutes to act. Damaging winds (58+ mph), hail, lightning, and tornado spin-ups are all possible.
Immediate Actions (10 Minutes)
- Move indoors β stay away from windows
- Charge phone and power bank
- Unplug sensitive electronics (surge protection)
- Bring pets inside
- Secure trash bins and lightweight outdoor items
- Test NOAA weather radio is on alert mode
Shelter Location
- Lowest floor, interior room with no windows
- Bathroom or closet under stairs works well
- If in a mobile home, evacuate to a sturdy building before the storm arrives
During the Storm
- When thunder roars, go indoors β lightning can strike 10 miles from rainfall
- Avoid plumbing and corded phones
- If driving, pull over away from trees and power lines
- If a Tornado Warning is issued, move to interior lowest floor immediately

Power Outage Basics
- Keep refrigerator closed (4-hour safe window)
- Use battery lights instead of candles when possible
- Report downed power lines β assume they are live
After the Storm
- Inspect roof and siding for hail damage β photograph for insurance
